A new LED system lights up the seaside in Fano, Italy

The municipal administration of the town of Fano in Italy re-baptized its new advanced technology-based street lighting upgrade plan as “mille Led” [one thousand LEDs], showing its commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability.

An important step in the road to the lighting of a small town in the Marche region is the new public lighting on the Sassonia seaside, along one of the most popular beaches in the region.

The councillor for public works in Fano, Cristian Fanesi explained: “The seaside promenade is an important tourist attraction for our town. It was designed in 1984 by architect Gianni Lamedica who collaborated in the development of the new works. Our administration is attentive to this important infrastructure along the beach, hence launching a major urban redevelopment process that will continue over the next few years”.

With a € 130,000 investment, Aset Spa, the multi-service company of the Municipality of Fano, launched the upgrade for the lighting system. The old system was made up of 70 light poles fitting 280 mercury vapour lamps that consumed more than 50000 kwatt/h for over 4000 hours a year with energy costs of around € 9000. The new LED system has maintained all 70 poles, but reduced energy consumption by 57% (23.225 kwatt/h yearly) at the same total burning hours, with total annual electricity costs of € 4042 (-58.6%). For Lucia Capodagli, president of Aset Spa, it is a big change for the city because “it will make us move from high consumptions and poor lighting to energy savings and increased lighting efficiency, with expected savings of over €111000 in the next 20 years”.

According to councillor Fanesi, the LED technology, which also reduces CO2 emissions of about 12000 tons every year, “will help put Fano amongst the region’s most advanced cities in terms of urban redevelopment and make it closer to becoming a smart city, which is more liveable and competitive.”

The fixture chosen for the new lighting system is Aura (Disano illuminazione), a product with a design that differs from traditional street lamps to highlight the use of the new LED technology. The new LED system uses 1-10 V dimmable Aura with a special colour and anti-corrosion treatment given the short distance from the sea.
