Dubai will be the first city in the world to use Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) technology for its public lighting infrastructure. The project is part of the investment made for Expo 2020, which will transform the city of the Arab Emirates in one of the most advanced smart cities on the Planet.

Li-Fi technology, which allows the transmission of data 100 times faster than Wi-Fi, will be integrated into the LED sources of the entire Expo area to be used by the computers and smartphones currently working with the traditional Wi-Fi system.

Connection is the central theme of the 2020 Expo, which is in fact titled “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”. The master plan of the Expo area, which will rise near the new Al Maktoum international airport, includes the construction of three pavilions dedicated to the concepts of opportunity, sustainability and mobility.

The three pavilions, designed by studio HOK, are connected to a central space similar to a town square, called Al Wasl, which is the traditional name of Dubai meaning “the connection”. The project is therefore a combination of traditional Arab architecture and futuristic design.

The infrastructure of the Expo area has the shape of the tentacles of an octopus and is a sort of ultra-technological souk that concentrates great attention on the environment and alternative energy sources. The streets are entirely paved with photovoltaic systems that will account for at least half the energy demand of the event. The large solar panels will turn into screens illuminated with lights and digital projections during the evenings.

Other sustainable strategies include wastewater recycling, materials reuse and the monitoring of the carbon footprint produced for the construction of the pavilions and during the event.

Dubai Expo, which is scheduled to run from October 2020 to April 2021, is expected to attract more than 25 million visitors from 180 nations and, once the event is over, the three main pavilions will turn into a building complex hosting a university, research institutes, a museum on the history of the United Arab Emirates and a centre for fine arts and conventions.

LED lighting with ultra modern technology will be a major feature of 2020 Expo.
