LED beacons at sea

LED beacons at sea

Lighthouses, one of the symbols of seafaring tradition, finally adjust to the new technologies. The Lighthouse Service of the Italian Navy announced that all 154 lighthouses of its network are to be equipped with LED sources.

The first LED lighthouse in Italy was lit up in Naples at the San Vincenzo pier, with an official ceremony held on Thursday, 30th June. Admiral Donato Marzano, Logistics Commander of the Italian Navy, announced the ignition of the lights on the Amerigo Vespucci training ship, berthed at Naples for Naples Shipping Week.

The new LED lamp installed in the lighthouse was designed by the Navy Technical Office of La Spezia in collaboration with the National Institute of Optics at the CNR of Florence, which developed a patent for a new energy-efficient source that can be used on both fixed and revolving optics.

The advantages for switching to the LED technology are well-known and include lower consumption, longer lamp life and less maintenance. These are very important factors for this type of lighting infrastructure, where navigation safety is fundamental.

LED lights along the seaside

Coasts are not illuminated only by lighthouses. An important feature of coastal towns is the seaside. The lighting along the promenade is a key element in the redevelopment of a city’s waterfront.

In these settings, when choosing the right lighting fixture, town administrations should take into account both technical and aesthetic details. As for the materials and the different components of the lighting fixtures to be installed outdoors at a short distance to the seaside, they need a level of protection capable of withstanding the corrosive action of sea salt. Aesthetics is equally important to ensure a seamless blending into the surrounding area, fully respecting the landscape.

The lighting fittings for urban decor manufactured by Disano illuminazione offer exceptional technically and aesthetically solutions even for the lighting of seaside settings. Several Disano fixtures in both the classic and innovative versions have been chosen in a number of projects in Italy and in the world.

Amongst the most recent LED lighting projects used for the Italian coastline, worth mentioning are the Sassonia promenade in Fano (see gallery) and the Sant’Elia promenade in Cagliari (see project specifications); as for the most important projects outside Italy, let us mention the great town planning intervention at Lima’s Costa Verde, the capital city of Peru (see gallery below).

The new LED technology offers the opportunity to renovate a lighting system, while cutting consumptions and fully respecting the environment.
