Cortina 2021 contributes to relaunching Italy’s image

Cortina has won the organisational challenge set by the 2021 Alpine Ski World Championships, the largest international sporting event held during the pandemic. Disano, as a technical sponsor, contributed to the event’s success with the quality of its LED lighting of the Vertigine and Olympia delle Tofane slopes.

A world championship is a great opportunity for promoting Italy’s image. The 2021 Alpine Ski World Championships, which ended in Cortina d’Ampezzo on Sunday 21 February, were the most prominent international sporting event held during the pandemic. Fourteen days of competitions involving 600 athletes from 71 nations, were watched by 500 million viewers worldwide on live television and in streaming. The Alpine Ski World Championships were broadcasted in 190 countries, confirming the event’s status as an extraordinary international showcase for Cortina d’Ampezzo, the Queen of the Dolomites, and for Italy itself. The success paves the way for Cortina to host the Winter Games in 2026.

‘In an economy battered by the pandemic, the World Championships pumped some life into local businesses, Cortina, Veneto and Made in Italy’ said Valerio Toniolo, Commissioner for the region’s hosting of Cortina 2021, who commented on a survey that confirmed the event’s positive effects on both the region’s economy and Italy’s image.

‘We can now say that Cortina has become a model – confirmed the mayor of Cortina, Gianpietro Ghedina, ‘we aim to provide future generations with a modern and competitive ski resort ‘.

An essential part of Cortina 2021’s success was played by its technical sponsors, including Disano illuminazione, which contributed to the positive accomplishment of a complex sporting event, which posed many organisational difficulties.

Disano, a technical supplier of the 2021 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, provided the outdoor LED lighting systems for two of the event’s most important ski tracks: the Vertigine slope where the Men’s Downhill and SuperG races took place and the Olympia delle Tofane slope, which hosted the Women’s Downhill and SuperG competitions. The LED lighting was used to help organisers prepare the tracks and deliver spectacular evening races.

Disano’s LED floodlights incorporate the best lighting technology currently available and are also an eco-friendly solution, in line with the programme pursued by the Cortina 2021 Foundation. Environmental sustainability and area revitalisation are, in fact, at the forefront of Cortina’s objectives, as confirmed by Alessandro Benetton, president of the Cortina 2021 Foundation: ‘The Championships show that you can do amazing things with high standards of sustainability, safety and security’.

Disano illuminazione, an Italian manufacturer with a long experience in lighting major international sporting events, has been collaborating with Cortina for years to relaunch winter sports in the city. Disano also boasts several years as the technical sponsor of the Snowboard World Cup and the local ice hockey team.
